My modern approach to hypnotherapy uses a combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis.
Solution Focused Psychotherapy is extremely beneficial but its effects are significantly enhanced by the use of hypnosis which enables the subconscious mind to work out the right changes for you.
What should I expect?
At the initial consultation I will discuss with you what you want to achieve and how hypnotherapy could help, including how the brain works and how our thought patterns can change during hypnotherapy.
At follow up sessions we will discuss your progress, help you to think more positively and develop your own solutions. I'll then guide you into a relaxed state of hypnosis so that you can consider what we've discussed.
It is important to understand that effective therapy is not 'done' to you but is something we would achieve together. Change will happen because you want it to and you are prepared to take the necessary steps to achieve it.
What is Solution Focused Therapy?
Solution Focused Therapy avoids analysing past problems or painful memories. If you have experienced unpleasant events, we acknowledge they happened and then help you move your outlook and/or behaviour from where it is to where you want it to be.
In short it:
- acknowledges how you currently are;
- supports you to decide where you want to be; and
- helps you make the necessary changes to get there.
If you want to make changes the therapy can be highly effective in motivating you to achieve them.
What is hypnosis and what is it like to be in a hypnotic trance?
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring, deeply relaxed mental state similar to daydreaming.
If you've ever driven home and then not been able to remember part of the journey or sat watching a film then wondered what happened when the end credits started rolling up, you've probably experienced being in a hypnotic trance.
My clients often comment how pleasant trance is and many don't want it to end.
Whilst in hypnotic trance your mind is more responsive to suggestion, during therapy the suggestions are designed to help you change your thought patterns.
Will I do silly things whilst in hypnosis or afterwards?
Unlike the stage shows I will not take control of your mind or make you do anything you don't want to do. No-one can hypnotise you against your will and your mind will reject any suggestion that's not right for you.
